The Orfeón attended the Lucerne Festival under the baton of Claudio Abbado to interpret Mahler’s Symphony No.2 with the Festival Orchestra.

To commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the death of Verdi, Claudio Abbado invited the choir to Berlin to interpret Verdi’s Requiem, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and the choirs of Swedish Radio and the E. Ericson Chamber Choir. These performances were recorded on a CD which received a Grammy nomination in the “Best Choral Performance” category.

Performing two pieces at the Salzburg Festival: The Damnation of Faust by Berlioz (six performances) and the world premiere of the choral Symphony No.5 Requiem, Bardo, and Nirmanakaya by Philip Glass (two performances).

In 1997 the Orfeón celebrated its 100th anniversary. That year it performed more than sixty concerts that culminated in Berlin, on 30 and 31 December, with the Philharmonic of the German capital and master Claudio Abbado.

In 2015, through a shared agreement, Musikene and the Orfeón Donostiarra created this award with the aim of encouraging musical research in the Basque Country. The award is annual and does not include a monetary prize.
