Created in 1988, as the result of the vision and efforts of Antxon Ayestarán, the Orfeón Txiki, or Little Choir, aims to ensure the continuity of the Orfeón Donostiarra (San Sebastián Choral Society) and to carry on the work began in the Music Workshop and the Children's Singing School, which is incorporated into the heart of the organisation.
Over the last fourteen years, hundreds of children between the ages of 9 and 12 have attended twice-weekly practice sessions and have received the musical education they require to become singers, regardless of whether or not they later join the Orfeón Donostiarra.
The choir's first conductor, Ana Etxeberria, was responsible for instilling appropriate behavioural habits and teaching vocal technique, as well as fostering the all important area of musical taste. During the first year, the choir was formed by 69 girls and 21 boys from various schools in San Sebastián, and has remained roughly the same size ever since.
Right from the beginning, the children's choir took part in many cultural events taking place within the city: participating in the Saint Agatha's day choral processions around the streets of San Sebastián, singing traditional Christmas carols and joining in the Hail Mary and High Mass on the feast day of the Holy Virgin (15th August) in the St Mary of the Choir Basilica in the Old Part of the city.
In 1995, Jaione Escudero took over from Ana Etxeberria as conductor. Three years later, in 1998, the choir experienced one of the high points of its career when it participated in the Kantata 98 in the Anoeta Velodrome along with 37 other children's choirs. During this concert, which took place in April, the choir premiered Tomás Aragüés' work Jimmi Potxolo, which is based on the texts written by Bernardo Atxaga. A little later, the children's choir faced the even more demanding challenge of accompanying the adult Orfeón at the Santander Festival and the San Sebastián Musical Fortnight, where it sung Mahler's Third alongside the Israel Philharmonic, under the conductorship of Zubin Mehta. In the same year, the choir also gave a charity concert for UNICEF in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre in San Sebastián, and the first of a series of Christmas concerts which have since become a yearly event.
Since 2004, Alaitz Guridi is the director of the choir.
